03, 1966
Bobby Orr signed his first NHL contract with the Boston Bruins
-- a two year deal paying $70,000 plus a signing bonus -- the
top salary in the game.

06, 1990
The NHL's San Jose franchise was officially named the "Sharks"
by club officials. The team's official logo, colors and uniform
design were to be displayed at a later date.

Chicago Black Hawks purchased Red Sullivan from Boston

12, 1941
The NHL altered rules to establish "minor" and "major"
penalty shots. Under the new rules, a minor shot would allow
a player a shot at goal from a line 28 feet away.

14, 1979
Edmonton Oilers signed free agent defenseman Charlie Huddy.
Huddy went on to win five Stanley Cups as a member of the Oilers.

17, 1971
Montreal's Guy Lafleur made his NHL debut, and picked up three
assists in the Canadiens' 7-4 exhibition game victory against
the Bruins, at the Forum.

22, 1934
A meeting of the NHL board of governors was held, where it was
approved that collective salary limits for all clubs for the
1935 season would not exceed $62,500 with an individual salary
limit of $7,000 to any one player.

24, 1937
NHL adopted a new "icing rule", whereby a team which
deliberately shot the puck out of its defensive zone (when not
shorthanded) would have the ensuing face-off brought back to
the defensive zone point from where the puck was shot.

28, 1935
The St. Louis Eagles requested permission to suspend operations.
The NHL rejected their plan. One month later the league purchased
the franchise and had a dispersal draft for the players.
